When we got back from Florida, I found that the sunflower heads had rotted in the little time we had been gone. I have thought about it and I’m sure I know why. I put them in a plastic container in the garage. I got worried about pests getting into them so I sprayed a perimeter of peppermint to repel. Because the container wasn’t airtight the mist got in with the sunflowers heads and started a mold feast in the warmth of the garage.

That ruins my plans for bird seed on snow days, but it was definitely a learning experience. Next time, no matter how short the time is, I’m going to place them in newspaper and pay attention to the container I’m using. I hope my next try ends better! And any tips from someone who has stored them before will be appreciated.
